CLAIM: “Dr Barrow is building a new Ferry Terminal for Banjul and it is just behind the Christians cemetery in Banjul as the old current one will be use (d) as part of the Ports expansion program. Work is progressing as Negmar inteternatinal (international) Inverness Corporation,” the Facebook post claimed.

VERDICT: Misleading Post. Contrary to the source of this information, The Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport Works and Infrastructure, Ebrima Colley said the government of the Gambia is not building the said ferry terminal but it contracted it to a private company called Negmar Group.

“It is not building it, it’s Negmar. They were granting a license to operate ferry service between Banjul- Barra. They were granted licenses to build, to operate. So, when you operate then you have to have a terminal,” Mr. Colley said.

On November 21st 2023 at around 1am a Facebook post appeared with a claim that the government of the Gambia is constructing a new ferry terminal in Banjul and it is situated behind the Christian Cemetery.

MISLEADING: THE GAMBIA GOVERNMENT IS NOT BUILDING A NEW FERRY TERMINAL, RATHER CONTRACTED TO A PRIVATE COMPANY CALLED NEGMAR COMPANY LTD.

The post has generated 90 reactions, 24 comments and 12 shares. The post further explained that the current terminal will be used as part of the Ports expansion program.

On Mar 16th, 2022, the Point Newspaper published that Negmar Company has been given a permit to operate ferry services between Banjul and barra.

“The Point has been reliably informed that a Turkish multinational private company called Negmar Company Ltd., has met the requirements of The Gambia Maritime Administration and is therefore given permit to operate ferry services between Banjul and Barra”.

Conclusion: Following an investigation of the assertion from the Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Transport Works and Infrastructure, Ebrima Colley proved that the said claim is misleading.

The fact is the construction is being done by the Negamar Company and not the Gambia government.
